Fenerbahce (Turkey)
Fenerbahce is back in the Champions League after being forced to withdraw from the competition in 2011 as a consequence of some match-fixing allegations.

The Yellow Canaries were the runners-up in the Superlig behind rivals Galatasaray which made them spendmore than 10 million euros to strengthen the squad in the summer transfer period.

Fenerbahce signed Turkish international defender Egemen Korkmaz, while midfielder Mehmet Topal has returned to the club after spending two years in Spain with Valencia.

They’ve also managed to sign Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt from Liverpool on a three year contract for just one million pounds.

The Turkish Superlig will only start on the 19th of this month, which means that this will be Fenerbahce’s first competitive game this
season.

Vaslui (Romania)
After a draw against Rapid in Bucharest, Vaslui get back to their winning ways and secured all points in their home game against Petrolul Ploiesti in a match that ended 3-0 for Marius Sumudica’s men in the second round of Liga 1.

As I mentioned in my Liga 1 previews, Vaslui signed more than a dozen of players in the summer transfer period, but also lost defender Paul Papp (Chievo) and Brazilian top scorer Wesley Lopez (Al Hilal) for a fee of 2 million euros each.

Vaslui has a short European history, they’ve been eliminated twice in the Europa League play-offs, losing to AEK Athens in 2009 and Lille in 2010, but managed to eliminate Sparta Prague an year later to reach the Europa League group stages for the first time.

Vaslui recorded victories against Sporting Lisbon and Lazio in the Europa League group stage but failed to qualify. Their only presence in the UCL (2011) ended with a 0-2 loss on aggregate against Twente in the third qualifying round.

The Betting Verdict
Vaslui has the advantage of already playing two competitive games in Liga 1 while Fenerbahce only played friendly games this summer. I’m not sure how much will that count, but it’s a factor worth taken in consideration.

Fenerbahce is obviously superior when it comes to European experience and players quality, but Romanians hold a good record against Turkish clubs. I remember Steaua Bucharest eliminating Galatasaray in 2008 CL final qualifying round, despite the fact that the Turkish side was a strong favorite to progress.

I’m sure Vaslui will perform better than most think, but it’s hard to believe they’ll manage to hold off the Turkish giants on Sukru Saracoglu stadium.
