THE stench surrounding the Danny Green-Paul Briggs 29-second boxing charade could become the subject of a police investigation.
One of the worst nights in Australian boxing history is about to get a lot more complex with an inquiry to be launched into whether the embarrassing scenes in Perth constitute a "sham contest".
Boxing's governing body in Western Australia, the Professional Combat Sports Commission (PCSC), will appoint a retired Supreme Court judge to preside, with talk of a "fix" impossible to ignore.
Briggs admitted on Friday he was "speechless" after watching a replay of the glancing blow that sent him to his knees, but remained adamant there was nothing illegal about the fight.
"I didn't take a dive. I've never in my life taken a dive," he told the Nine Network.
But PCSC chairman Simon Watters confirmed the bout could be deemed a "criminal offence" if any irregularities could be proved.
"We've had information from a number of big betting agencies alerting us to very unusual patterns of betting on the afternoon before the fight," Watters said.
"That, coupled with the way the fight ended, has caused enough concern for us to want to hold a full inquiry.
"If it turns out that it was a sham contest then we will refer that to the police. It is a criminal offence to hold a sham contest.
"Under our Act there are also sanctions. I think one of them is 12 months in prison."
Watters, a Perth barrister, said he had concerns about the fight as he sat ringside.
Boxing and sporting circles around Australia continued to buzz yesterday with talk of a rort, with Centrebet confirming one punter had placed $50,000 on Green to win by knockout in Round 1 at the price of $3.50.
Boxing identities also confirmed that Briggs had been in a fragile mental state for more than 12 months and in financial difficulties after splitting from his wife Tasha.
The $200,000 purse to fight Green was perhaps just too tempting for him to resist.
World champion trainer Johnny Lewis has heavily criticised of the Green camp, particularly Green Machine Promotions, which staged the fight.
"The other night was the biggest stink I've ever seen in all my time in boxing," Lewis said.
