It is the biggest shock in the EURO2012 so far. The Russian was leading Group A prior to the last group stage game but regretly eliminated by the rock bottom Greece to end their EURO journey unexpectedly.
As the Russian bid farewell, it also leaves a quest if the winner of EURO2012 will come from the same group with Russia again.
Why again? It's not coincident but it happened over the last 16 years that all the winners were came from the same group with Russia.
2008, Russia, Spain, Greece and Sweden were in the same group. Russia finished the tournament 3rd and Spain won the tournament from Germany in the final.
2004, Russia, Spain, Greece and Portugal were in the same group. Russia were eliminated in the group stage and the magical Greece won the cup from Portugal in the final.
2000, Russia did not qualified.
1996, Russia, Italy, Czech Republic and Germany were in the same group. Russia were eliminated in the group stage and Germany crowned the European Champions from Czech Republic in the final.
Group A's Czech Republic and Greece enter the quarter final as player rather than a contender. The duo are far behind the big boys but again, the Russian's quest of the winner of EURO always come from the same group with Russia is haunting the games.
